As we prepare to welcome the Holy Month of Ramadan, our focus naturally shifts toward spiritual reflection, family, and fasting. However, maintaining your oral health is just as important during this period.
At Tooth Fairy Dental Surgery, we often receive questions from our patients about how to manage their dental routine while fasting. To help you have a comfortable and worry-free month, we’ve put together this essential guide.
1. The Importance of a Pre-Ramadan Check-up
The best way to manage dental health during Ramadan is to act now.
- Prevent Emergencies: A small cavity that doesn’t hurt today could become a painful abscess two weeks into your fast. Dealing with a toothache when you cannot take painkillers or water during the day is incredibly difficult.
- Professional Cleaning: A professional scaling and polishing session right before Ramadan helps reduce the bacteria that cause “fasting breath,” giving you a fresher start.
2. Managing “Fasting Breath” (Halitosis)
Bad breath during fasting is usually caused by Dry Mouth (Xerostomia). When you aren’t drinking water, your saliva flow decreases. Saliva is necessary to wash away bacteria and food particles.
- Brush after Suhoor and Iftar: Make sure to brush thoroughly after your morning meal (Suhoor) and your evening meal (Iftar).
- Don’t Forget the Tongue: Most odor-causing bacteria live on the tongue. Use a tongue scraper or your toothbrush to clean it daily.
- Hydrate Well: During non-fasting hours, drink plenty of water to keep your body and mouth hydrated for the day ahead.
3. Does Visiting the Dentist Break Your Fast?
This is the #1 question we get! According to most scholars, routine dental treatments do not break the fast, provided that you do not swallow any water or medicinal fluids.
- At Tooth Fairy: Our team is highly experienced in treating fasting patients. We use high-volume suction to ensure no water is swallowed during cleanings or fillings.
- Heavy Work: If you require an extraction or a procedure that necessitates heavy medication, we recommend scheduling these either before Ramadan begins or after Iftar.
4. Tips for Your Ramadan Oral Routine
- Use Floss: Food stuck between teeth from Iftar can ferment overnight and lead to bad breath and decay.
- Avoid Excess Sugars at Iftar: It is tempting to indulge in sweet treats and juices when breaking the fast. Try to rinse with water immediately after eating sugar to prevent it from sitting on your enamel.
- The Miswak: Using a Miswak is a beautiful tradition and is excellent for stimulating saliva and cleaning teeth throughout the day.
